New Testament Language Training

General Vocabulary List

Below is all of the vocabulary that we will use to work through the grammar of New Testament Greek in the Greek In A Week course. There are about 6000 different vocabulary words in the New Testament. However, since the vast majority of those words only appear once, most beginning Greek students learn only 600 vocabulary words and will recognize 80% of the words they see on a page of the Greek New Testament. Since our task is simply to learn the structure of the language and let the computer supply the rest of the details, like vocabulary we can get by with memorizing around 100 words for the course. Hopefully, over time you will come to expand that six times to an understanding of all common words but for now we will limit ourselves to this select list. It is best if you can learn them prior to the course. We will review them very briefly in the course and have split them up into four sections according to the order we will use them in the course. So if you don’t have time to learn them all, or you want to work with smaller chunks you can use these four sections instead of the general list.

Vocabulary

Click on words to hear them pronounced. Hover your cursor over them to see an English gloss. There is a slight delay before the gloss appears. This is a great way to review and practice vocabulary. Try to guess the English gloss before it appears. Review the vocabulary in small groups until you can say the gloss for each word before it can display.

For some words there is additional grammatical information displayed. This all will be explained in class so you don’t have to worry about prior to the course. For those of you who have had some Greek before here is the explanation of that information. For nouns, the nominative singular form is listed first, and then the genitive form (to let you know if there is a root change). If the genitive root doesn't have a change only the genitive ending will be listed preceded by a dash. Finally, there is an article (to let you know the gender). For adjectives, the three nominative singular forms are listed, which represent all three genders.
