Inductive Bible Study Goes Cross-Training

Learn how to use Greek in your Inductive New Testament Bible study and research (2 Day Workshop)

Overview

This year our New Testament Language course will be taking a turn in a more exegetical direction. Instead of spending the majority of the time learning particular language structures and then using the gained grammatical knowledge to translate some passages in the final few hours, we will be shifting the proportions of the seminar so that the majority of the course is actually working through chapters of the New Testament and determining to what extent the original Greek can confirm, refine or challenge our interpretations of our initial translation based study. In 2013 we hope to offer this seminar several times online and in a few locations. Our text will be I John. So by the end of the workshop not only will you have a basic grasp of the structure of the Greek language you will also have a thorough understanding of each pericope in I John and the epistle as a whole. You will have a clear understanding of how to better focus inductive Bible studies/research and how to integrate the original language safely and meaningfully into your personal studies even at very basic levels.

Portions of this workshop will be tested by several small groups in the Spring of 2013. The entire workshop will first be offered beginning in June.

Goals

  • Gain a deeper understanding of I John section by section.
  • Learn how topic and focus can keep the interpretation side of your inductive research tied to authorial intent.
  • Learn the basic structures of Greek.
  • Learn how the foundational Greek text can support, refine, or challenge your interpretation of each section of I John.
  • Gain a deep understanding of the "difficult" passages in I John (such as 1 Jn 3:9; 3:22; 4:3; 5:16 etc.,) and how they function with respect to the Epistle as a whole.
  • Reflect upon how these interpretations crossed with the Greek text affects your personal application of each section of this Epistle.

Benefits

If you aren’t crossing your inductive (translation based) Bible study of the New Testament with the original Greek text, you don’t know what you’re missing. You will come away with specific benefits of your study of I John with this course and you will have learned a good practical pattern and method for working with other texts as well. By crossing your translated based study with the original language in I John you will:

  • learn and practice how to weight and structure the data collected in inductive study
  • ask new questions of the text
  • see original structures and argument flow
  • have more conviction for theological conclusions
  • enjoy the beauty of the very words that God inspired

Format

Online versions of the course will be held in two-hour segments on a Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evening. Then there will be a six hours session on Saturday. Local versions of the course will be held over two days (Friday and Saturday normally 9-4 with an hour lunch break.

  • Prior to the seminar, participants are required to learn the Greek alphabet and be familiar with 100 vocabulary words. (There are three 20-minute videos that cover this material.)
  • The first two hours of the seminar are devoted to mapping out the general structure and mechanisms of Greek and English and how they relate to each other.
  • The remaining time will be devoted to a series of one hour studies that will all follow the same methodology and basic schedule:
    1. Determine the various options for topic and focus for each section in our English versions.
    2. Discuss which options are the most prominent and why.
    3. Have a guided look at the Greek text to see if the original language confirms, refines or challenges our interpretations.
    4. Discuss how this section works with the overall topic and focus of the Epistle.
    5. Discuss possible points for personal application and theological implications.

The Institute of Biblical Greek is proud to offer this unique approach to inductive Bible study that uses the very structure of the Greek language (topic, focus, verb) as an interpretive method to refine inductive Bible study. This exegetical workshop is an extension of previous seminars that we have offered in the past (such New Testament Language Training and Greek In A Week). This course should benefit those who simply want to enhance and refine their current inductive Bible study methods or for people interested in the original language of the New Testament. It is the perfect course for anyone who wants to start using original language tools in their Bible study, or to refresh skills that you have forgotten, or to prepare for future seminary language courses.

Although there are plenty of people interested in this type of course, it has proven difficult to find enough interested people in one city to bring the course to particular cities. To solve this problem we have created an "Interested List" below to help enough interest build for particular cities, and now we are offering the course online.

New Testament Language Training Interested List

You can also add additional cities to the list. Feel free to check many cities (or the "will travel to any city" box). Come back any time to check on the interest levels of your cities. You can enter your email address to highlight all of the cities that you are currently interested in. Please tell your friends and colleagues about this list so we can increase the "currently scheduled" list.

Once the interest level fills up, we will email everyone who is interested in that location to determine when would be a good time for the majority, if not all, of those interested. We normally like to schedule the event at least a couple of months out so we all have time to make plans and others have time to join us.
