Greek In A Week 2004
(Only 3 days in class)
in Moscow, Idaho

Read Student Reviews

1. Description

Now you can refresh your biblical language skills or start from scratch without taking significant time out of your busy schedule. This year the Greek In A Week course in Moscow will only require three days of attendance. The first two days of material will be covered on an audio/visual CD that will be mailed in the summer and is included in the course tuition. Participants are expected to work through the CD lectures at their leisure prior to attending the in class segment of the course. Not only does this format cut down on travel expenses it also allows both beginners and those who are looking to refresh their skills to attend the same classes.

This Greek course will work through all of the essential chapters of Machen's text and will work on translating I John on the final day of the course. New learners will come away from the course with a clear view of the structure of the language, the tools to begin sharpening their skill on their own. Perhaps the most important aspect of the course is that those new to Greek will start asking questions in their exegesis that simply don't occur to English speakers.

2. Dates and Times

Greek in a Week in Moscow will be held on the three days directly following the Ministerial Conference, September 30 - October 2. The class will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday and run until 6:00 p.m. each day, except Saturday, which will release earlier for those who need to travel. Each day we will have two half hour breaks and an one hour break for lunch. Snacks will be provided.

3. Location

This year GIAW will be meeting in Greyfriars Hall, a large and very nice classroom in the heart of downtown Moscow. Greyfriars Hall is located in the same building as Cannon Press and the Christ Church offices where Douglas Wilson serves as pastor. This location will not only provide a very conducive learning environment, but also access to plenty of diversions during the breaks. Main Street has number of small restaurants and a very nice Christian owned coffee shop.

4. Required Materials

The tutorial will also use the time tested standard, Machen's
NEW TESTAMENT GREEK FOR BEGINNERS. The preceding title link will take you to The Trinity Foundation's website where you can order the book (hardback) directly from them. The book is also available from Amazon.com, but only in a much more expensive paperback, and it is an uncorrected edition. Trinity Foundation offers the paperback version for $11 and the hardback version for $17 --a bargain-- and it's a better edition. It's the same book, same layout, good quality binding and paper, and with errors corrected and wider margins for easier note-making.

This text will provide helpful descriptions of basic grammar many exercises to translate during the course. Mr. Schwandt's lectures do not merely reiterate Machen's text but are designed to reveal the consistent system of the language and the continuity of the principal parts.

In addition to Machen, introductory selections from Reviving Biblical Greek on pronunciation will be sent to students before the course begins. It is important to be comfortable with the alphabet prior to the intensive course. Links with free audio files will be sent to students to facilitate this preparation.

After the course finishes, a couple other texts are strongly recommended for review and assistance. These include:
A Reader's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, by: Kubo Sakae

New Testament Greek Beginnings, by: David L. Thompson
