Benefits of online classes

Learning Greek online makes Biblical and classical language learning possible no matter where you live or where you go to school. These online courses may be classified as "distance education," but given the audio/visual components and personal interaction, it is nothing like a traditional distance education course.

The primary advantage to our method of providing professional instruction is the flexibility it affords to students without compromising the level of education. You can take the online course as a regular weekly meeting type of course or use a more indefinite "work-at-your-own-pace" format. In either system students have the opportunity to work with the instructor in a live setting each week. They are able to ask questions and hear other students' questions during the online meetings. They also see demonstrations as the instructor draws them on the live online whiteboard.

Greek for self learners and schools that are unable to offer Greek

Such flexibility now makes it possible for anyone to learn historical Greek. Often times classical Christian schools and colleges would like to offer Greek but simply don't have enough interested students to afford the specialized instruction. IBG combines these sets of students and will work with any institution (high school, college, or seminary) to offer a course that will satisfy their requirements. Basically, IBG enables schools to offer Greek without any overhead (assuming the student is willing to pay for the course). Please have your school administrator contact us to work out the details.

Is it classical Greek or Biblical Greek?

The distinction between classical and Biblical Greek should only be an exegetical distinction and not be a pedagogical distinction. We chose the curriculum that will allow students to read the Greek NT as well as surrounding historical and classical material. So students do not have to choose between classical and Biblical Greek. In fact, it would be best if we simply distinguished Ancient Greek from Modern Greek. The name of this website is BiblicalGreek.org in order to distinguish it from Modern Greek sites and to indicate that it is an ancient Greek website with a focus on the Greek New Testament.

Class Descriptions

The IBG web courses are directed by John Schwandt, M.A. He is a Senior Fellow of Classical Languages at New Saint Andrews College and has taught multiple language courses there for well over a decade. Mr. Schwandt also developed Greek In A Week intensive language learning courses. This will be the12th annual presentation of those courses at various locations across the United States this year. Mr. Schwandt founded and serves as the director of the National Biblical Greek Exam, which all web course students are encouraged to take.

IBG is currently offering a variety of Greek courses and structures. The Athenaze Courses are for students who are new to Greek or would like to refresh themselves from the beginning. The GNT reading group assists those who would like guidance in reading the Greek New Testament. To encourage participation it is open for month to month subscriptions. Students are given assistance to read three books of the New Testament each year. Not only may it be used for students who have just finished learning the basics, those whose skill may be a little rusty may use this course to sharpen their skills.

Prof. Schwandt personally teaches the courses. He has years of experience teaching classes online. Prof. Schwandt is known as an energetic instructor whose enthusiasm for Greek is contagious. He has recorded his lectures with plenty of animated and graphic examples of the course material. Each week there are live office hours available to meet with Prof. Schwandt. We use an online confernce system that can work in any brower. All you need is a microphone (a web-cam is not required but is helpful.)

There is a web page dedicated to each section in the book with plenty of recorded helps. Anyone who registers for either volume one or volume two has access to all of these materials indefinitely. If you are working at a typical college pace it should take about 30 week to work through all of the material for a paticular volume. However, we provide access to the live office hours and welcome students to email questions for one calendar year so you work at your own pace. If you don't complete the first volume in one year you can continue with all of the non-live materials or sign up for additional live sessions if you desire. Of course you can complete the course more quickly if you wish

Fee Structure of the Beginning Courses:

The course tuition is only $450. This works out to approximately $7.50 for each hour of instruction. (Compare this to the price of piano lessons.) This is also comparable to $75 per college credit. We can also offer a payment plan if necessary.

Upon completion of Athenaze volume 1, students are encouraged to enroll the second year course to complete volume 2. Although we recommend taking your time to work through volume 2 of Athenaze, often times graduate students need to complete beginning Greek within one year. We have an accelerated summer Biblical Greek track, schedule and resources to help them accomplish their goal.

The required textbooks are not included in the course tuition. Tuition includes hours of audio/video lectures, readings, exercises, quizzes, exams and one year of access to live weekly office hours.

Structure of the GNT Reading Group:

GNT Reading Group

The Intermediate Reading Group runs indefinitely. The group is run on a subscription basis so users can participate whenever it is convenient. Members can come and go as they wish according to their schedule or the New Testament books that interest them.

  • Classes are filled on a first come basis; you are welcome to sign up at any time.
  • The group subscription is only $25 each month.
  • If you are looking for professional guidance or advanced grammatical instruction as you read through your Greek New Testament, this class is perfect for you.

Our Specialized Conference System:

We use Adobe's Acrobat Connect Pro to meet online, which allows for live conferences over the internet. The conference system works like a website. You simply go to the class web page, login, and then you are part of the class with audio and visual communication. This system is flash based so it will work with both PC's and MAC's and firewalls are not a problem. The conferencing system allows students to see the instructor and interact online through their microphones. Students are also welcome to type comments and questions in the real-time chat window during the conferences. This additional mode of communication increases the amount of classroom interaction and benefits students in a way not possible in a conventional classroom.

Do not confuse this live online course with other so-called online courses that are actually traditional correspondence courses that only use email. Nothing compares to personalized live courses, which are now available through the Institute of Biblical Greek.
