Course Description
Latin shouldn't be scary, and translating shouldn't feel like a long, painful math problem. To avoid this in our Beginning Latin I course, we try to make our students comfortable with Latin at an early stage. This not only makes homework less burdensome, but it also helps the student toward a greater fluency with the Latin language. We still cover all the basic grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of a normal beginning Latin course (using Wheelock's Latin), but we'll combine that with an emphasis on simple, fun composition and reading.
Specifically, we'll be going through half of Wheelock's Latin textbook (chapters 1-20). We'll also use the ever-popular 38 Latin Stories to complement Wheelock's. Because we like our students so much and don't want to abandon them, we'll be offering a Beginning Latin II course next year to get through the rest of Wheelock's and into some intermediate Latin readings. Plans are even in store for some advanced courses in the future.
For grading, students will be assigned short quizzes throughout the course, as well as four longer tests. All the quizzes and tests are computerized, graded automatically, and give the student detailed information about their weak areas and where best to focus their study efforts. They'll receive a final grade for the course based on their quizzes, tests, composition assignments, and class participation.
Course Format
Though our course is an online course, we try to give students all the attention they would get in a traditional classroom setting. In each class meeting, we make sure to answer questions from students and provide a short lecture on any new material. For urgent questions, students may email the instructor between class meetings.
We're also using the new Adobe Acrobat conferencing system for our classes. Since it's Flash-based, it co-operates with all browsers, operating systems, and firewalls, as long as you have flash enabled. It's also full of nice features for an online class. There's an instructor webcam, a chat window, a whiteboard, and full support for microphones. Most importantly, we record all classes and allow students to review them any time, as often as they like. This way, if your student misses a class for any reason, they can just log in and watch the recording. As far as we know, no other online latin course offers this type of opportunity for review.
