We have three accents

acute, grave and circumflex

Grave should be view as a variation of acute on the ultimate (acute changes to grave when on the last syllable and followed by another word without intervening punctuation.

Circumflex is like an acute but less flexible. It is possible to use on the penult when the penult is long and the ultima is short.... OR only on the ultima when the ultima is long.

All of the accents do the same thing. They all show where the word is stressed.
