Thanks for the great class today you all are a great group. Feel free to type away as I am talking or ask for the mic to ask questions.
The assignment for this week is to do everything in Chapter 1 (follow all of the exercise instructions). I recommend scheduling time to work through all of the assignments 3 times. Review is so important when learning a language. Then practice reading the first section of Matthew 1. I will select some of you to try various parts next week.
Feel free to work ahead in the next chapters if you have time.
Please post questions on the Agora forum so others can learn from your questions and have a chance to answer. Don’t wait for me to answer, if you think you know the answer please post it. You will learn an amazing amount by teaching. I will correct you if you get it wrong.
The next class will cover chapter 2 and 3
Blessings,
John

In section 1 on page 16 the text states, "There are a couple of sounds in historic and ethnic Greek...." When you say ethnic is that the same as modern?
Also, thanks for a great class.

I can't seem to get the Keyman software to work. Any ideas? Also, although I am listening to the Matthew, the speed is a real problem. Sandy _________________ sandy

You may have to contact Keyman for support. You can also try using the Windows Greek keyboard.
Speed is a major issue. I recorded reading at a slow to normal speed for someone who is fleunt, but is sounds so fast to someone who is learning that is difficult to tell where the words even start and stop. This is typical problem with learning any language (that doesn't help solve anything, but it is a good sign that we aren't taking any dangerous shortcuts.) When I was working on Modern Greek I had to get some recordings on a tape player and nearly where out the tape stopping and rewinding to review a single sentence. It would take me about ten to twenty mintutes to memorize a single (quite short) sentence and say it at the recorded speed. But once I got to the point where I could say it at the same speed by understanding and fluency skyrocketted.
So go for smaller chuncks but master them.

On the Matthew verbal speed. Don't worry, we are but ducklings now. We'll be greek swans later.
An encouraging experience that may apply to Greek listening comprehension. Way back in college I took an intensive Spanish class. Then spent the remainder of the Summer in Mexico speaking no English. At first it was confusing, even after the official class, but after a week or so in Mexico things really came together. I could understand bus conversations that I overheard. Speaking, formulating native words to Spanish, took three weeks to get going well. So it was listening comprehension in a week and speaking took three times as long. _________________ Thanks,
