1. Time and Format of Tutorial

The 2003-2004 Intermediate Greek Tutorial will meet online Fridays at 1:00-2:50 PST. The classes will begin August 22 and run through May 7. The tutorials will meet for 32 sessions which provide for these holidays: October 17 (Fall Break); November 28 (Thanksgiving); December 26 - January 9 (Christmas Break 3 weeks); March 19 (Spring Break).

Each week participants will translate a section of scripture positing comments and questions on the tutorial forum. In the conference sessions, participants will take turns translating and offering questions and comments on the text. Mr. Schwandt will facilitate answers to questions, review basic grammatical concepts, and introduce intermediate grammar. Using the grammar contained in the translation passages Mr. Schwandt will often give short lectures reviewing and explaining the grammar. The conferencing software enables everyone to type comments and questions in the real-time chat window as Mr. Schwandt lectures. This increases the amount of classroom interaction and benefits participants in a way not possible in a conventional classroom.

Invest a few hours a week to refresh and sharpen your Greek reading skills. Start meeting with others to read and learn more Biblical Greek today! This year we will translate Mark, Ephesians, and Galatians.

2. Tutorial Goals

The goal of the Intermediate Reading Group is to translate one gospel and two epistles every year. The selections will change from year to year so that members will be able to work through most of the New Testament. The selections for 2003-2004 are The Gospel of Mark, The Epistle to the Philippians and The Epistle to the Galatians. Intermediate grammar will be taught along the way.

Members will translate a chapter of text using a number of resources and discuss grammatical and literary issues on a private forum. The group will meet once each week for two hours in a live net meeting to work through the difficulties of the text. The instructor will lecture for part of the meeting and guide discussion. However, it will attempt to allow all participants to translate. Even while one person is speaking the chat box allows other questions and themes to come to surface.

The course is designed for motivated individuals who desire to learn. There will be no grades given but performance should be judged by the level of interaction on the forum and in class during the group meeting and lecture.

3. Required Materials

The required books for the course are a Greek New Testament, Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics and whatever additional resources a student needs to quickly translate the New Testament. Here are a few texts I recommend for people at various these skill levels.

Skill level Texts
Rusty A Grammatical Analysis of the Greek New Testament: Unabridged; by: Max Zerwick, Mary Grosvenor
Biblical Greek; by: Max Zerwick
Average A Reader's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament; by: Kubo Sakae
New Analytical Greek Lexicon; by: Wesley J. Perschbacher (Editor)
Sharp A Reader's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament; by: Kubo Sakae

About halfway through the year I also recommend an intermediate text like Biblical Greek Beyond the Basics. These all can be found on the In Print Resource site.

4. Prerequisites

Not much Greek background is required for the reading group. This course is perfect for those who want to increase the fluency of their Greek skills or refresh skills that have been lost. The minimum age for the intermediate tutorial is fifteen.
